Greenpeace alert about canned tuna from illegal sources

Greenpeace is warning that tuna fish from pirate fishing in the Pacific might be on sale in European supermarkets. In the last few months, several ships have been convicted of illegal tuna fishing practices in the Pacific. The ships belong to the Spanish fishing companies Albacora, Calvopesca and Conservas Garavilla SA as well as to the Ecuadorian company Nirsa SA. These companies sell tins of tuna to supermarkets in most European countries, including Austria, Germany, Spain, Great Britain, France and Holland.

Supermarket chillers are full of unsustainable seafood

Threatened seafood as well as seafood fished and farmed using environmentally destructive methods can be found in abundance in Dutch supermarkets. The majority of the supermarkets do not take into account the fragile state of marine life when buying seafood products.

Austrian retailer Pfeiffer stops selling endangered fish

Greenpeace report: Endangered fish species in Austrian supermarkets

Today Greenpeace Austria has launched a campaign to pressure the country's retailers to drop unsustainable and endangered seafood from its shelves. The campaign kicked off on Wednesday with the report ‘Sell-out of the Seas’, which includes a league table of major Austrian supermarkets.

ASDA nets last place in league table

ASDA was the worst company in a league table ranking supermarkets on their seafood sustainability in the UK. They stock at least 13 species of threatened fish and have no public policy on the sustainability of the fish they sell.
