Organizing events, raising awareness and meeting key people in their countries: this is the first part of the Solar Generation work in Africa!
From October 5th to 7th , the Solar Generation group in Kenya went to a youth and climate change workshop at Goethe Institute here in Nairobi. The theme of the workshop was 'Climate Tales - The Story of our Climate and People' In attendance were students from most of the public and private universities in Kenya. David, the coordinator, gave a brief presentation on Solargen and there was a lot of interest generated. Most of these students got to register with Kenya Solargen and the first Kenya Solargen meeting is now planned in two weeks time.
There is a lot of action that is already underway in the respective universities. Last week David had a meeting with the chairlady of the environment club from the United States International University : their chancellor is already aware about Solargen and is ready to work with Solargen! It is the same in the universities of Kenyatta University, Moi University, Maseno
University and Egerton University.
In Uganda, the youth started to organize lots of activities to raise awareness on climate change on the campuses and meet key people on climate change issues : on August 19th Catherine, the solargen coordinator, met with Mr. Paul Isabirye the principal Meteorologist/ WB carbon fund manager, Ministry of water Lands and Environment. The Ministry of Water, lands and Environment is the National focal point for climate change. Uganda being one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, the government is concentrating on adaptation. There is no current program that is directed towards the youth however, Mr. Isabirye pledged to give solargen all the support we need in lobbying for funding and authorization of our activities!
