On January 26-29, 2007, around 43 Solar Generation Pilipinas members from Iloilo and 6 SG from Negros joined the annual, socio-cultural-religious festival of Iloilo City, the "Dinagyang Festival".
The idea of attending this festival started during our first initial
meeting in Central Philippine University with Environmental Management
students on January 10th for the Energy Efficiency program. We
were able to get the attention of one of the school administrators who
liked the idea. The Dinagyang event will be a good start for
Solar Generation-PANAY.
Dinagyang
is the present progressive word of the Ilonggo word, meaning "making
merry" or "merry-making". Wearing the "Dont Melt Our Future" - shirts,
SG-Pilipinas was able to present the Pilipinas Go Renewable! campaign
and also mobilized youth groups. Amonst theme were the students of
Central Philippine University, University of San Agustin, CPU
Mountaineering Club, Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity and other individuals
who joined the parade under the banner of Pilipinas Go Renewable!
Thumbs
up and clapping was the response of the people as a sign of support in
the push for Clean Energy in the country, while we approached the five
judging areas where the crowds gathered. A teacher from Central
Philippine University gave a thumbs up sign upon when he saw his
students holding a paper turbine, marching on the streets of Iloilo.
The best part of the demo was when the MC welcomes our group and shouts
the Pilipinas Go Renewable! while the SG's are waving their hands with
paper turbines. People started to talk about global warming after our
group passed by and a student from the University of the
Philippines,Visayas, interviewed Jed Benitez regarding SG's
participation in the festival and its campaigns for their report in
broadcast communication. We were able to convince youth leaders to take
part in the Clean Energy Revolution and to challenge their government
officials to go for clean energy.
Good plans are being organized with other youth groups in Iloilo, so expect more info soon!
