Tepco's Discharge Plans Of Contaminated Sub-drain Water Into The Pacific Ocean

TIn 2015, after several years of opposition, the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations has given its consent to Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to discharge radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean. The water to be discharged is removed from underground wells in the vicinity of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and should not be confused with the highly contaminated water used in the cooling of the molten reactor cores. This short briefing summarizes some of the issues around the planned discharge of sub-drain water and its implications.
