Genetic engineering is a new technology that allows scientists to insert genes from one species into another in a way that could not occur naturally. As of today, it has been used mainly to transform plants and give them new
characteristics, such as herbicide tolerance or insect resistance. They enter the food chain either directly into human food, or indirectly through animal feed. As GE organisms are new living organisms that can interbreed with natural organisms, there are a lot of scientific discussions about the potential impacts they can have on the environment or human health.
