The usual incandescent light bulb is the most wasteful product using up the most amount of electricity in the world. Such bulbs use five times the electricity of their equivalent efficient bulbs, a waste which translates to 500 million tons of CO2 annually – more than the entire emissions of countries such as Canada.
Greenpeace representatives walked between stores, offices and cafes, explaining to people the importance of energy conservation, and changed their wasteful bulbs with CLF bulbs which were donated by Philips.
“Today we are starting with the real change, from here, from our streets and businesses and homes”, said Nili Grossman, Greenpeace Mediterranean Climate & Energy Campaigner. “With such a simple action, each of us can make a substantial change for the world. We are here today to say that just as climate change is caused by mankind, it is also in our hands to stop it. We have a ten-year window of opportunity to make a significant reduction in our CO2 discharges, otherwise the world as we know it today will be come unbearable.”
Global warming is a well-established scientific fact. The UN recently established that drastic measures must be taken stop greenhouse gasses. Last year, the US Pentagon stated in a report that it sees global warming as the biggest long-term threat to homeland security.
“Many believe that climate change is a problem for far-away country and polar bears, rather than something that will effect us all”, added Grossman. “But climate change are a harsh reality, which is beginning to effect us all, everywhere, every day. The effects of climate change will increase as time goes by – unbearable heat, devastating storms and floods, desertification, leading to famine, diseases, resource wars – all these are what we have to look forward to if we do not act now”.
