Ankara, Turkey — Nobel Peace prize winner and head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Dr. El Baradei was confronted by Greenpeace today. As he was speaking at a conference on ‘Harvesting Nuclear Energy’ at the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency (TAEK), Greenpeace activists held a banner which read “Seed Nuclear - Harvest Death” in front of the TAEK building. Three activists posing as Dr. El Baradei, a nuclear cooling tower and a nuclear missile exposed the inseparable link between nuclear energy and nuclear bombs.

Hilal Atici, Energy Campaigner for Greenpeace Mediterranean said, “Dr. El Baradei won his Nobel peace prize for his work on nuclear disarmament, but this is inconsistent with promoting nuclear power, which is the essential seed for nuclear weapons.”

“Dr. El Baradei and our government might be looking closely at Iran’s nuclear ambitions but to ignore the 90 US nuclear weapons based here in the Turkey at the same time as promoting nuclear technology is hypocritical. These weapons, located at Incirlik just across the border from the Middle East, are not subject to any UN inspection system and are a violation of the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty’, Ms Atici added, “You do not need to go far; Dr. El Baradei should inspect Incirlik”

The IAEA is tasked with policing the spread of nuclear weapons yet at the same time it promotes the very technology and materials used to make nuclear weapons. Dr. El Baradei himself is on record as stating that “countries which can currently produce nuclear energy peacefully are only six months away from developing nuclear weapons” (1).

Greenpeace is calling on Dr El Baradei and the Turkish government to work for a truly “Nuclear Free Turkey” by stopping any proposed plans for nuclear power plants and to send the 90 US nuclear weapons currently based in Turkey back to the US.

Truly sustainable and peaceful energy can be delivered using clean and safe renewable sources, such as wind and solar, and energy efficiency. Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler has thus far failed to promote these peaceful energy solutions in Turkey; instead, he is working with the nuclear lobbies against well being of Turkish people.

The nuclear industry, with US government support, is strategically targeting emerging economies such as Turkey and developing countries to sell dirty and dangerous technologies, since developed countries are not buying their reactors anymore. Spain has recently decided to phase out nuclear energy in favour of wind and solar energy being the fourth European country. Other three countries that have decided to phase out nuclear energy are Germany, Sweden, and Belgium.
