Executive Director of Greenpeace Mediterranean Uygar Özesmi has informed the Minister of Energy Taner Yıldız during the meeting held in Ankara regarding the actions that should be taken on climate and energy until 2050.
Enlarge ImageMr Yıldız was presented several reports by Greenpeace about how to reduce the carbon emissions of Turkey with realistic and low costs, how to terminate the energy dependency on external sources, how to secure energy supply while meeting the demand with productivity and renewable sources and how to sustain economical and social development in line with environment protection policies.
During the meeting, Mr Yıldız was given a letter stating the facts about the climate and energy policies of Turkey. "I would like to dignify the renewable energy sector and provide the conditions it deserves. Now, we are waiting for the renewable energy proposal to pass into law. During this process, everyone should fulfill their duties, especially the private sector."; he claimed.
Greenpeace Mediterranean executive director Uygar Özesmi said that Turkey should pass the renewable energy proposal into law and start an Energy [R]evolution in order to save the climate without losing any more time. "The biggest threats and barriers on energy policies are the coal fired and nuclear power plant plans. The incentives provided for the investments on these dirty energy sources should be applied to renewable energy sources as well" indicated Özesmi.
He also added that, the minister should announce the short and long term renewable energy and energy productivity targets and the pathway to achieve these targets. Furthermore, Prime Minister Erdoğan should act as a leader in Copenhagen to save the climate and be a role model for the other leaders of the world.
