Istanbul, International — For the second day in a row today, Greenpeace sent a direct message to US President Barack Obama, reminding him of the urgency to act now to protect the climate. From their inflatable boats on the Bosphorus, Greenpeace activists displayed banners reading “Act for Climate at Copenhagen,” as well, they placed buoys in the water reading “Save the Climate for Peace.”

Greenpeace demands that Obama take the long awaited and ambitious leadership during the next global climate agreement to be held in Copenhagen in December 2009.   Industrialized countries should agree to a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, based on 1990 levels, by 2020, which is only possible if US government is in agreement.

“The water resources in the Middle East will decrease 50% by 2030 if necessary action is not taken to protect the world’s climate[1].  There is no question that this will worsen already existing tensions.” said Korol Diker, Climate &Energy Campaigner of Greenpeace Mediterranean. “We need Barack Obama to give concrete and binding commitments for Copenhagen agreements”.

Yesterday, 20 Greenpeace activists opened banners on the 64 meter high Bosphorus bridge emphasizing, “peace is not possible if climate is not saved” due to the predicted tensions resulting from increased droughts in the Middle East and Mediterranean region.
