Ankara, Turkey — Today, Greenpeace together with other environmental groups held a "die - in" activity in front of the Energy Ministry in Ankara protesting the nuclear tender announcement due from the government tomorrow, September 24th. During the die-in in front of the Ministry a group of Greenpeace climbers unrolled a banner saying "STOP" to support the protest. Both activities finished by police arresting all 37 activists.

Representing the activists our energy campaigner Korol Diker said "Instead of acting as a spokesperson for the nuclear lobby, Energy Minister Hilmi Guler should focus on real solutions for our energy needs. These solutions are clean, renewable energies and energy efficiency. Although the government tries to silence the opposition, the voice of reason should be heard. This is why we are here today."
Despite trashing hundreds of billions of dollars in the past fifty years, no solution to the waste and security issues could be found. One reactor produces around 25-30 tonnes of nuclear waste every year. This means 12.000 - 14.000 tonnes of waste is being added to the already existing pile of waste.
Recent examples from France, Sweden and Japan together with hundreds of other accidents and incidents, shows how close we are to another Chernobyl.  In France alone there are about 900 incidents are reported every year.

"Nuclear: an economical disaster"

Along with being unable to deal with all the waste, nuclear power us also economically stupid and disastrous. Because of increasing costs and construction time, companies do not want to invest without credit guarantees. This means tax payers need to take the burden. It is not acceptable that this  government wants to spend our difficult earned billions of Turkish liras on dirty, dangerous and expensive nuclear power stations.
The only 2 plants currently under construction are behind schedule and well-over budget and when the plants complete their life time, decommissioning and cleaning will add  billions to the bill for a future government and our children to pay.  It is notable that neither The World Bank nor the Asian Development Bank give credits to the nuclear projects on the grounds that they are too risky.
