Jerusalem, Israel — This morning dozens of Greenpeace activists submitted over one thousand letters of opposition in order to cancel the decision of the National Infrastructure Committee to establish another coal power station in Ashkelon.

"Now it is the public's turn to have a say" said attorney Nili Grossman, Greenpeace Energy Campaigner. "The national infrastructure committee was more beholden to the demands of the electricity company. The committee refused to heed the public's voice and ignored the positions of the Ministries of Health and Environmental Protection. Celebration is over now. The Committee is committed, by law, to give any objection time to talk and be heard."

"We are sick of the power elite," Grossman added. "I call everyone who opposes the coal power station to join the thousands who have already signed a letter of objection.”

The National infrastructure commission announced last week the opening stage for public objections to the new coal power station in Ashkelon. For the 20 days remaining until the 9th of August, the Committee will receive the letters of opposition from the public. In the end the Committee will be committed to discuss and give them an answer.

The cost of the establishment of a the new coal power station is approximately 2 billion dollars for its initial construction but additionally there will be losses of hundreds of millions of dollars each year due to the fact that the station will increase by 10% the greenhouse gas emissions of Israel ( the health and environmental damage caused will result in sanctions too). The station is strongly opposed by the Ministries of Health and Environmental Protection, heads of local authorities in the region and all in the environmental movement.

Greenpeace will be organizing more opportunities for the public to sign letters of objection. Everyone can already sign it on our website (Hebrew).
