Wrapping up the Mediterranean

RIP bluefin tuna

30 August 2006

Greenpeace activists today formed a symbolic 'tuna graveyard' with mock crosses and a banner saying "R.I.P. Bluefin tuna. 1996-2006" inside a tuna ranch in Cartagena, Southeast Spain. The environmental organisation has called for the immediate closure of the Mediterranean bluefin tuna fishery until it can be properly managed and the adoption of urgent measures, including the establishment of a network of marine reserves to protect 40% of the Mediterranean Sea and regenerate its fish stocks (1).

Authorities give in to tuna fisherman and tow Rainbow Warrior out of French waters

24 August 2006

Following a second day of hostility from tuna fishermen in the port of Marseille, who have blocked, boarded and now tied themselves to the Rainbow Warrior, the international environmental organisation's flagship is being towed out of France's 12 mile territorial zone under order by the Prefecture Maritime (the French Military Maritime Police).

French Tuna ships block Rainbow Warrior entry into Marseille port

23 August 2006

Greenpeace’s flagship the Rainbow Warrior was prevented from docking in the port of Marseille earlier today, as the port authority revoked its previous permission to dock while some 20 industrial tuna fishing boats blockaded the environmental ship’s path. The Rainbow Warrior had planned to hold open boats in Marseille as part of its current campaign to raise awareness of over fishing in the Mediterranean. (1)

Greenpeace demands immediate closure of the Mediterranean bluefin tuna fishery

22 June 2006

The bluefin tuna population in the Mediterranean Sea may be on the brink of collapse and the fishery must be closed immediately, said Greenpeace today. The organisation's ship Esperanza, in the Mediterranean on the 4th leg of its fourteen-month Defending Our Oceans expedition, (1) has spent the past month documenting and exposing the disastrous management of the fishery.

Marine Reserves in the Mediterranean now

15 June 2006

Marine life in the Mediterranean is in danger of being wiped out unless 40% of the sea is protected by reserves, says a new Greenpeace report. The report, "Marine Reserves for the Mediterranean Sea" highlights the threats facing the Mediterranean and maps out in detail a proposed network of marine reserves to be implemented by 2012. (1)

Fishing piracy killing off Mediterranean tuna

24 May 2006

Bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean is being driven to the brink of extinction, by unscrupulous fishing piracy and ineffective management, a new Greenpeace report reveals today. The report, "Where have all the tuna gone?" highlights the need for urgent measures to improve and enforce fisheries regulations and protect breeding grounds as part of a recovery plan, without which Mediterranean bluefin tuna could soon be a thing of the past (1).
