Press release - August 4, 2009
Greenpeace is reiterating its call for John Key to adopt a 40% by 2020 climate change target, following the release of Green Party analysis showing 40% is achievable.
"The Green Party has shown that a 40% reduction target on 1990
levels can be done. The Greens has to be congratulated for doing
what the Government should be doing on this issue - looking at the
real numbers," said Greenpeace Senior Climate Campaigner Simon
Boxer.
"What these numbers show is that New Zealand is in a position
adopt a 40% target and that John Key could take this target to
Copenhagen in December and protect New Zealand's clean and green
reputation.
"The Green Party's approach stands in stark contrast to the
meaningless economic modeling touted by Climate Change Minister
Nick Smith and New Zealand's largest polluters. These models are
not applicable because they ignore almost everything New Zealanders
can do to tackle climate change."
Nearly 87,000 people have joined Greenpeace's Sign On campaign,
which is calling for the 40% by 2020 (on 1990 levels) target. See
