When whaling first boomed in the 17th century, it must have seemed as though whales would never disappear. Yet, by the mid 1940s their numbers had been drastically reduced.

Despite a moratorium on commercial whaling being declared in 1986, whale populations are still a long way from complete recovery. They now contend with additional threats such as pollution, climate change and collisions with ships.
