This October, Japan is hosting a meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the body charged by the UN with conserving the world’s animals and plants. The UN warns that excessive fishing will continue to severely threaten marine ecosystems unless action is taken immediately.
The creation of a network of marine reserves is key to protecting important fish stocks like tuna, which are under pressure from the world’s fishing fleets.
The CBD has already agreed to establish a global network of marine protected areas by 2012, yet progress towards this target is painfully slow with less than 1 percent of our oceans fully protected.
The Government of Japan has a responsibility to show leadership this year and be an advocate for solutions that will ensure the survival and restoration of the world’s oceans and fish stocks. Let’s make it clear that there’s massive support for marine reserves. Add your voice now and ask your friends to do the same!
