IPCC: Synthesis Report briefing

What is the IPCC

The UN's climate science advisory body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, for its "efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change." This briefing sets out how the IPCC works.

The destruction of the world’s forests is one of the main causes of climate change, second only to the energy sector. Tropical forests contain up to 40 percent of the world's terrestrial carbon and play a powerful role in mitigating the growing instability of the climate. The destruction of forests accounts for approximately one-fifth of total greenhouse gas emissions.
