Whether you just want to write the odd letter to your local newspaper, or if you're a dedicated campaigner, using the media is an effective way to reach people that you want to hear your message.

Types of media

Today the media has far-reaching scope, through radio, TV, newspapers and the internet, and they range from local to national to international readership.

You may be thinking that you need to get into the media publications with the widest scope for your message to be effective, and to make a difference. But it's a misconception that only national/international media counts. Local and regional media are important.

A local paper is read by many people, and what happens in people's backyards directly affects their lives, so there's a higher vested interest in the topic for the reader. Getting in to local media is also important for ensuring that your community knows about a campaign.

Every city and large town has at least one daily paper and usually local radio stations.

An important fact about local papers (and regional and local radio and TV) is that they cut across social groups. Your local free paper goes through every door, regardless of age, income, education or politics and audiences of talkback radio are rising.

Find out how your local media works

Media doesn't just happen. It is researched, written or recorded, edited and packaged, and fitted to a schedule for printing or broadcast.

If you learn how you can fit into this process then you're more likely to be successful in being included in the media. Look at how much time you have and where you’ll get the most impact for your time.

If you have a passion for making change, or simply want people to know what's going on, then get writing to newspapers and calling talkback radio.
