We are looking for an experienced and creative communications strategist who has excellent management skills and is able to inspire and lead our communications team of 4. You will have solid experience in communications; have a good grasp of global environmental issues, and be effective at developing and implementing communication strategies using both traditional and new media tools and techniques. You will have a commitment to social change and understand the role of non violent direct action in achieving this. You should demonstrate strong management, communication and messaging, writing and negotiation skills and an ability to work under pressure. A good knowledge of the New Zealand media and trends in global communications is a distinct advantage.

Overview

This is a middle management position within Greenpeace Aotearoa/NZ reporting to the campaign manager. It has the key responsibility for creating and ensuring implementation of effective communications strategies to achieve the campaign and organisational goals.

The Communications Manager is a key communications strategist for the organisation. They are tasked with ensuring the development of communication strategies at both the campaign and organisational level. They will stay abreast of trends and ensure the development, and implementation of the most effective communication tools and techniques.

With a staff of 3 and a budget, the position requires excellent management skills, including team building and ability to ensure the development and implementation of prioritised and focused work plans that achieve agreed organisational goals.

You will work across all campaign issues and together with the campaign team develop strategies to achieve environmental goals. The Communications team plays an integral role in GPNZ campaigns through the development and delivery of communication strategies, including how and when to work with media, both traditional and online, and public communication tools and messages. The Communications team are integral members of the campaign team and play active roles in delivering Greenpeace campaigns.

You will also work closely with the marketing manager and their team as together they carry a lot of responsibility for the integrity and effectiveness of the Greenpeace image and message. The organisation requires an integrated approach to all communications through close liaison with other departments, in particular fundraising and external distribution channels.

They will also establish a relationship with relevant Communications staff in the international organization to ensure effective exchange of information, skills and cooperation on international campaigns.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the communications team.

  • Be the key contact for other Greenpeace offices, including Greenpeace International on communications issues.

  • Coordinate and deliver the Communications Team's work plan.

  • Manage the communications. team and any agreed organisational projects, exercising professional skills and experience, in adherence to applicable legislation, organisational policies and the values of Greenpeace.

  • Hold regular one-on-one meetings with team members.

  • Undertake recruitment as required.

  • Develop and manage communications budget.

  • Maintain communication with GPI communications unit to ensure an overview of global communications strategies and implement where relevant messaging to ensure consistency on global, regional and national level

  • Ensure training and development for the communications team members.

  • Ensure management and responsibility for image and video libraries and AV equipment.

  • Ensure GPNZ has the appropriate protocols and policies in place for communications work.

  • Maintain an overview of Greenpeace actions and communications taking place globally, identifying opportunities for promotion within New Zealand.

  • Produce regular internal reports, evaluating performance of Greenpeace's communications output against communications and campaign objectives.
  • Communications

  • Approve and oversee media communication materials, including media releases, advisory statements, background briefings, reports, web notices, question and answer briefing sheets, press packs, etc.

  • Approve and sign off all public materials that are produced at Greenpeace NZ to ensure consistency of messaging, brand protocols and design of materials are adhered to

  • Maintain and develop relationships with media representatives, commentators, external agencies and contacts.

  • Advise on editorial trends, media attacks and anti-environmental public relations strategies.

  • Advise on message development, targeting and evaluation of campaign media strategies.

  • Advise on communications requirements of NVDA-led campaigning.

  • Ensure the adequate briefing of communications contractors including photographers and ideographers.

  • Standardise a print, design and production process for all of Greenpeace's communications, in cooperation with the fundraising and direct marketing staff, including producing and implementing use of an in-house style-guide.

  • Together with Fundraising coordinate production of the Greenpeace magazine.

  • Coordinate Greenpeace copyright and library obligations internally.

  • Oversee professional management of the Greenpeace image collection.

  • Work with the marketing manager and the web manager to ensure communication with cyberactivists is consistent with agreed messages and strategies.

  • Ensure the use of the Greenpeace NZ website is maximised to help achieve the organisations goals.

  • Explore and develop opportunities for increasing our profile both offline and online.

  • Together with relevant staff from campaigns, communications and fundraising develop and drive implementation of communications strategies that help Greenpeace NZ deliver messages, shift opinions and win campaigns;. Strengthen audience segmentation and targeting of campaign communications strategies.

  • Work with campaign team to develop and implement the communications objectives and strategies for their issues.

  • At least 4 years of broad experience in journalism, or as an editor, or in the fields of media relations or communications.

  • Ability to develop clear, targeted messages to achieve effective results.

  • Information technology, database management, and audio-visual technology literacy.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, editing, on-line writing, and content management skills.

  • Demonstrable and detailed knowledge of media operations and media contacts.

  • Ability to reliably interpret policy in order to respond to external inquiries quickly and under pressure.
