Energy Subsidies & Central and Eastern Europe

Main responsibilities:
  • Developing the strategy to redirect EU financial flows away from  nuclear energy and fossil fuels and into renewable energy and energy efficiency;
  • Supporting Greenpeace's energy campaign work, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe;
  • Maintaining close relations with the relevant EU institutions;
  • Developing a network of relevant contacts and representing Greenpeace;
  • Addressing the media and professional audiences.
Profile:
  • Environmentalist with strong commitment to furthering Greenpeace’s campaign goals;
  • Sound expertise on energy issues and related industries, especially on nuclear energy;
  • Degree-level education;
  • At least a year of experience in campaigning or political advocacy;
  • General EU political expertise;
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Fluency in Central and Eastern European languages desirable;
  • Good communicator;
  • Stress-resistant;
  • Able to perform well independently and as part of a team;
  • Able to travel very frequently to the Central and Eastern European region.
Tasks:

You will work closely with the EU climate and energy director, energy campaigners in EU offices, especially with our Central and Eastern European offices, and with international climate/energy campaigners.

Your two main objectives will be:

1. To support Greenpeace energy campaigning within the 10 new EU Member States in Central and Eastern Europe.

2. To have a strategic impact on financial flows from European  Institutions (including, the European Commission and Euratom) away from nuclear energy and fossil fuels and into renewable energy and energy efficiency. This will entail the design of a three-year strategy to influence political decisions, including:
  • An analysis of how to impact subsidies by European Institutions to energy projects in Europe,
  • Support, through political and media work in Brussels and in the  region of Central and Eastern Europe, activities undertaken by national Greenpeace offices against EU subsidies to nuclear energy and fossil fuels,
  • An analysis of the opportunity for a Euratom Treaty Review Conference.
This position is based at the Greenpeace European Unit in Brussels,  though expected to travel to, and work from, the Central and Eastern European Greenpeace offices frequently.

This is a one-year position, subject to prolongation depending on performance of the employed person.
