Harpooned: Greenpeace exposes scandal at heart of whaling

Stake outs, testimony from informers, hidden cameras and tailing trucks full of stolen goods - it reads like a Hollywood movie, but it was an every day experience for Greenpeace activists in Japan, who have spent four months cracking open a major conspiracy of corruption at the heart of Japan's government-backed, sham scientific whaling operation.

the scene at several locations in downtown Toronto today where Greenpeace activists
staged the aftermath of an accident at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.

Greenpeace warning: Déjà vu for Ontarians

On the eve of the annual general meeting in Paris of Areva, the world's largest nuclear company, Greenpeace called on governments and investors who may be contemplating building a nuclear reactor to think again, warning that new French reactors can seriously harm their energy sector and their financial situation. Areva is one of three companies hoping to win a contract to build reactors in Ontario.

In the latest edition of our quarterly Guide to Greener Electronics Samsung and Toshiba share top spot. Nokia misses out on top spot due to a penalty point for inconsistent global takeback. Nintendo remains rooted to the bottom with only a tiny improvement but Microsoft and Philips both improve their scores.

Wood shipment tracked, blocked (updated)

We've tracked a shipment of suspect wood from the Amazon to France on board the cargo ship Galina III. Some hours ago our activists climbed on the ship. Once our activists were onboard, the ship missed its chance to go into port. Its next chance is at dawn with the new tide, but for now it is headed back out to sea with our activists occupying its cranes.

On March 17, 2008, Bruce Cox sent an open letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty urging him to correct the injustice handed down to Robert Lovelace and others protesting uranium exploration on their traditional lands. Lovelace, currently serving a six-month jail sentence, is one of several members of the Shabot Obaajiwan First Nation that face punitive sentences for voicing their concerns about the lack of consultation and adverse health effects of uranium exploration on the community.

Some products were more advanced than others, but there's definitely room for improvement as none of them scored over 5/10.

In February of 2006, British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell and First Nations announced the Great Bear Rainforest agreements - a historic conservation plan for the Great Bear Rainforest, to take full effect in March of 2009.

Today, the Coastal Forest Conservation Initiative (CFCI) - an industry coalition of Western Forest Products, Interfor, BC Timber Sales, Canfor and Catalyst Paper – is implementing three groundbreaking milestones as part of a voluntary milestone agreement with Greenpeace, ForestEthics and Sierra Club BC. These new milestones bring us closer to our goal: full implementation of the Great Bear Rainforest agreements by 2009.

Unfortunately our new report 'Toxic Tech: Not in Our Backyard' reveals the fate of millions of tonnes of e-waste generated each year is largely unknown.

Set-backs for CCS in US and Canada

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), the technological poster child for the future of Alberta's tar sands and coal-fired electricity generation, has just had its biggest supporter pull the rug out from underneath its feet. The Bush administration has withdrawn its support for the FutureGen CCS project, which is doomed without massive public subsidies. The loss of support from the US government may seal the fate of this expensive and unproven technology in the United States. The technology is also unable to provide a solution to Canada's global warming crisis because of its high cost and long lead times.

Drastic change needed in aquaculture industry

Aquaculture as it is currently practised is not the answer to depleted wild fish stocks. On the contrary, the booming global aquaculture industry is seriously threatening marine and freshwater ecosystems and undermining food security across the planet. At the 2008 Seafood Summit in Barcelona, Greenpeace released Challenging the Aquaculture Industry on Sustainability, a report highlighting the need for the aquaculture industry to take immediate steps to change its current destructive practices.
