Governments challenged to deliver more ambitious emissions reductions targets

Fifty-five governments have submitted pledges to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to cut and limit their greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, as part of the Copenhagen Accord. In doing so, they have accepted the Accord's objective of avoiding dangerous climate change by keeping global warming below 2 degrees C. Greenpeace calls on the 55 governments to take on tougher new emissions targets or face charges that they are ‘greenwashing’ their plans.

With the passing of the Copenhagen Accord's 31 January deadline for its supporters to submit their pledges to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the absence of strengthened commitments has failed to meet the Accord's stated objective of taking action to limit global warming to under 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F), a critical threshold for avoiding the worst impacts of climate change.

The prospect of putting the Japanese whaling programme on trial and defending the principle of peaceful civil disobedience moved a step closer today. Following repeated denials of key defence evidence, the legal team for the Tokyo Two were today surprised and pleased to win the inclusion of all key witnesses.

Yesterday, HP added to its portfolio of products completely free of PVC vinyl plastic and brominated flame retardants (BFRs), releasing a desktop PC and a notebook series.

Danish police today released from custody four Greenpeace climate protesters who have endured 20 days of pre-trial detention in Copenhagen prison following a harmless peaceful protest staged on the evening of 17 December.
"The city of Copenhagen is a climate crime scene tonight, with the guilty men and women fleeing to the airport in shame. World leaders had a once in a generation chance to change the world for good, to avert catastrophic climate change. In the end they produced a poor deal full of loopholes big enough to fly Air Force One through.

Greenpeace strongly condemned the arrogance of the heads of state from the world’s most powerful countries for presenting a ‘take it or leave’ deal to the Copenhagen Climate Summit. Whilst en route to the airport they claimed the deal was done, it was not. All they left was chaos and confusion in their wake.

Comment : Copenhagen negotiations on Friday morning 18 December

World leaders are meeting on this morning to hammer out a declaration in the dying hours of the Copenhagen climate conference. On the table at the moment is a figure on the need for long-term funding for climate action in developing countries, but no clarity on who will provide the money and where it would come from. Leaders have also apparently agreed on short-term (fast-track) finance for the developing world. But heads of state and government have so far failed to agree on the crucial issues of emission reduction targets and how to verify these cuts.

This is the first time that current or future climate victims could legally influence a foreign industry by arguing that it endangers them due to greenhouse gas emissions.
