Naked emperors: the Greenpeace Guide to Climate Politics

Greenpeace's new Guide to Climate Politics shows just how badly the leaders of rich, industrialised nations are failing in their efforts to address climate change. In the last year developing nations have made real progress and put a series of offers on the table during the UN climate negotiations.

Climate Defenders Camp

Today, everyone is talking about climate change but not many people are aware of the role that forests play in helping address this important issue. Forests store enormous quantities of carbon and when they are destroyed, this carbon is released. In fact, tropical deforestation is responsible for around 20 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is more than all of the cars, planes, and trains in the world put together - and means that forest destruction is one of the biggest causes of climate change.

If we told you that there was one single way to cut a fifth of global greenhouse emissions - that simply involved hugging trees - would you believe us? Probably not - but that's exactly what's required. And we've got 50 activists in the Indonesian rainforest together with Inglourious Basterds star Melanie Laurent - doing just that - and calling on world leaders to do the same.

People could some day recall that it was the Information Technology (IT) industry's advocacy for strong action which tipped the balance at the Copenhagen climate summit. But that's not going to happen unless all of us press them to become climate champions. As our updated Cool IT Challenge leaderboard reveals, IT heavyweights such as Google, Microsoft and IBM are still hesitating to speak up on the urgent need for emissions reductions.
While our leaders continue to talk about what's "politically possible," the world continues to warm and precious days go by. The latest science shows that runaway global warming is even closer than we feared. We can't continue to allow our leaders here in the U.S. to sit back and play political games when our future is at stake.

Greenpeace activists and Iloilo residents are urging the local government to pull the plug on a plan to operate a coal-fired power plant in this city. The group calls the illegal, premature back-filling of the proposed site, despite the obvious environmental impacts it will create and strong public opposition to the project, as “stupid,” especially since there are clean and safe energy technologies -- such as wind, geothermal and biomass -- that are readily available.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a very broad term referring to the many different ways we can get the same amount of work (light, heat, motion, etc.) done with less energy. It covers efficient cars, energy saving lights, improved industrial practices, better building insulation and a host of other technologies. Since saving energy and saving money often amount to the same thing, energy efficiency is highly profitable.
