Little waterfalls in the Kalevala National Park
June 10, 2003. Greenpeace environmental camp began its work at
the village of Sudnozero in Karelia, within the projected national
park "Kalevalsky", the place of the world-known Kalevala epos.
Greenpeace activists from Germany, Denmark, Russia and the local
people spent 10 days establishing information boards at the
entrance gates of the park, developed camping sites, cleared up the
area of garbage. June 13 citizens of Kostomuksha-town joined the
environmental camp. Kalevalsky national park is a part of the
project "Green Belt of Fennoskandia" - the area prepared to be
listed into the UNESCO World Heritage. Lake Baikal, Kamchatka
volcanoes, Western Caucasus, the Altai mountains were already
listed into World Heritage.
