Harass environmentalists - threaten extremists

Feature story - 28 April, 2010
It seems the scenario tasted by Irkutsk law enforcement at the Baikal Environmental Wave is repeating in Samara.

Sergei Simak

Police officers involving officers of the anti-extremism and anti-counterfeiting departments searched working place of Sergei Simal, co-chair of International Social Ecological Union. As in Irkutsk, police officers didn't explain anything to the co-chair of the ecological organization and take away his computer.

Samara newspaper, quoting Igor Yusupov, the Acting Head of Information and Public Relations at police department in Samara region, says that searching of the working place of Sergei Simak was due to a criminal investigation. Journalists add that legal proceed was instituted, under Art. 282 Part 2 of the Criminal Code ("Extremism").

That's ridiculous. I cant understand the claims of the security forces. I just cant understand what is going on, - said Sergei Simak.

The point is that Sergei Simak is a representant of International Social Ecological Union in a coalition of non-governmental organization "For Baikal" and actively participates in an all-Russian movement in defense of Utrish national reserve park that Presidential Property Management Department plans to build a sport complex.

Recently non-governmental organizations asked federal authorities to cease harassment of environmentalists. The resolutions of the many meetings required to "exclude the use of force against members of environmental organizations fighting to preserve Utrish and Baikal, as well as to provide a thorough impartial investigation into the threats against environmentalists and protect them and their loved ones." As can be seen, the treatment of Russian citizens are left unattended.
