International — June 25 2007. Today on the World Heritage Committee UNESCO session held in Christchurch, New Zealand, the difficult situation formed about World Heritage objects on the Russian territory was discussed.

Greenpeace representatives in Russia informed the experts of the Committee about three most problem territories: Western Caucasus, Lake Baikal and Golden Mountains of Altai.

Today the question about “Golden Mountains of Altai” was examined in detail. A part of its territory - The Ukok Plateau, may be totally destroyed. “Gazprom” is planning to extend gas-main pipeline to China exactly through this territory. Us the result of the report Committee experts made a decision to send within 2007 a check-up mission of World Natural Heritage Committee to The Ukok Plateau. Out of depending on this mission results in case of beginning of pipeline constructing the “Golden Altai Mountains” region will be included in the list “World heritage under the threat”.

To great surprise and regret of participants of the sessions official representatives of Russian delegation didn’t somehow comment this situation as they simply were absent at examination of Russian objects.

The World Heritage territory “West Caucasus”, which is situated in Krasnodar region of Russian Federation not far from the city Sochi, is planned to be examined tomorrow.

Greenpeace Russia representatives will inform the Committee about the planning large-scale building in buffer zone of this territory. We’ll inform about the results of this discussion on our web-site.
