Greenpeace Russia intends to prove the Supreme Court illegality of the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 1 on January 13, 2010.
The Decree allows the Baikal Pulp and Paper Plant to start
dischargin waste into Lake Baikal without any restrictions on
volume, composition and time.
Legal analysis shows that the Decree was passed with violations
of the s international obligation on preserving sites of
world'Russian laws and Russia culture and environment heritage, one
of which is Baikal
. It is important to note that if international treaty of
Russian Federation establishes other rules then those proved by the
Russian law, Russian Federation must apply the rules of the
international treaty.
Government decision contradicts the fundamental principles of
the Constitution of the Russian Federation. All these violations
are quite obvious and we hope that the Supreme Court did not ignore
them "- said Mikhail Krendlin, the project manager for Specially
Protected Natural Areas in Greenpeace Russia.
