The Supreme Court will consider the case of Lake Baikal

Greenpeace Russia intends to prove the Supreme Court illegality of the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 1 on January 13, 2010.

The Decree allows the Baikal Pulp and Paper Plant to start dischargin waste into Lake Baikal without any restrictions on volume, composition and time.

Legal analysis shows that the Decree was passed with violations of the s international obligation on preserving sites of world'Russian laws and Russia culture and environment heritage, one of which is Baikal

. It is important to note that if international treaty of Russian Federation establishes other rules then those proved by the Russian law, Russian Federation must apply the rules of the international treaty.

Government decision contradicts the fundamental principles of the Constitution of the Russian Federation. All these violations are quite obvious and we hope that the Supreme Court did not ignore them "- said Mikhail Krendlin, the project manager for Specially Protected Natural Areas in Greenpeace Russia.
