IOC to shape the destiny of the Western Caucasus

28 August 2007. Today Greenpeace Russia and WWF Russia met with the delegation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) headed by Mr. Gilbert Felli, Olympic Games Executive Director. The IOC delegation arrived in Moscow yesterday to discuss with the Russian authorities the master-plan of preparing Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Greenpeace Calls to Ensure Environmental Safety of the Olympic Construction

Greenpeace insists on changing the plans for construction of the Olympic venues in the Sochi National Park. Today ecologists sent an appeal to the vice chairman of the RF Government A.D. Zhukov who is in charge of the implementation of the Federal Program for preparation of Sochi for hosting the 2014 Olympics. The ecologists demanded to exclude high conservation value areas from the construction plans.

Neva is Being Poisoned with Oil Products and Naphthalene

The first results of Greenpeace water patrol at the Neva River appear to be shocking. At the Okhta River which is one of the main Neva tributaries, a wastewater discharge point has been found where the oil product content exceeds the allowable concentrations by 140 thousand times.

Moscow-Amsterdam, August 20, 2007. Today, Greenpeace has published the letter of JV “Techsnabexport”, the organization being responsible for international nuclear contracts in Russia, about purchase of depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF6) from URENCO Dutch company at price of USD 0.6 per kg. The representatives of the nuclear industry consider UF6 to be “valuable” raw materials for the energy industry, but such low price makes it doubtful. In the opinion of Greenpeace, this is one more confirmation that the UF6 export from Western Europe to Russia is nothing else but import of radioactive waste to Russia.

Greenpeace Launches Clean Neva Project

Today, at a press conference in St. Petersburg, Greenpeace Russia released preliminary results of an independent research project on the environmental condition of the main river in the city and announced the launch of the Clean Neva project. The goal of the project is to improve the water quality in the Neva and to keep it clean.

The Press Service of the RF ministry of natural resources tomorrow, on the 23rd of May in Sochi there will be the opening of the forum “Sochi-2014 – a step to the stable development”, associated with the commemoration of the International Biological Diversity Day. Both the representatives of different ministries and departments and the representatives of sociality and science are going to take part in the forum. It is also planned to invite the representatives of United Nations Environment Program, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization, world resources institute, and of other organizations.

Stop experiments on kids!

June 1, 2007, Moscow. Today, on International Children's Day, Greenpeace activists came to the Russian Ministry of Health and Social Development demanding a stop to experiments on children. With the Ministry's approval, Russian children are still given genetically modified food. Furthermore, kids living in the radiation contaminated town of Muslyumovo have been part of an experiment all their lives.
