Executive summary: The common notion of Russia as a country of enormous expances of untouched nature is a myth. In reality, the area of intact nature is shrinking rapidly. The landscape is divided into increasingly smaller fragments by roads, railroads, and pipelines while extraction of minerals and wood and an artificial high fire frequency increasingly disturb nature within those fragmnets. This is true also for the European part of Russia, often thought of as the last harbinger of large-scale wilderness in Europe.
