Current Classification: Motor-assisted 3 masted schooner rig with horizontal gaffs (an unusual rectangular sail)

Greenpeace modifications include:
  • installation of specially-designed , fuel-saving, combined wind/motor propulsion system (a fully feathering, controllable pitch propeller which creates no drag when the ship is under sail, allows the engines and sail power to be used in varying proportions to suit the prevailing conditions)
  • installation of solar panels for hot water supply
  • installation of heating and hot water system using waste heat from the engines (heat exchanger)
  • conversion of fish hold into a theatre for videos and slide shows, and storage area
  • installation of desalination plant
  • installation of sewage treatment system
  • installation of satellite communication and navigation equipment
  • addition of five inflatable boats
  • installation of a mechanical crane for launching inflatable boats
  • sails - made of Dralon, a fabric known for its ability to withstand long-term exposure to sunlight.  A white dove is sewn onto the jib
  • colours - forest green hull, with rainbows painted on the bow
  • other features
    • A 1.8 metre dolphin, carved from oak, is fixed to the foredeck and appears to leap over the railing.  The dolphin was donated by a local support group in Germany
    • The original wheel from the first Rainbow Warrior is located in front of the bridge
    • The original bell from the first Rainbow Warrior is in the ship’s mess
