Asia Energy Revolution Ship Tour

Why is the Rainbow Warrior in Asia?

Greenpeace flagship, the Rainbow Warrior, is on an 10-week tour of Hong Kong, the Philippines and Thailand.  It's mission:  To sound the alarm in Asia about dangerous climate change, the single biggest environmental threat faced by our planet today.

Dubbed the Asia Energy Revolution Tour 2005, this tour will see the   Rainbow Warrior sail through the Asian region to campaign for the rejection of dirty energy sources, particularly coal, and to promote clean and renewable energy alternatives like wind, solar, hydro and modern biomass.

In the following weeks, the Rainbow Warrior will take us on a journey around Asia as we endeavor to publicly challenge climate criminals and their funders to shift their support to cleaner, safer and renewable energy projects instead of climate-destroying fossil fuel projects.

We aim to:
  • Secure political support  for renewable energy initiatives,
  •
  • Bear witness to and communicate the impacts of climate change in the region;
  • Help build a movement of concerned citizens and local communities who reject coal and demand clean energy in various countries;
  •
  • Motivate the public about the need to take action and learn more about Greenpeace’s work in the region.

Cleaner, safer energy solutions are within reach. Climate change solutions are within reach. Renewable energy is widely available and readily deployable on  the massive scale required to combat global warming.  However, these solutions will not work unless we use them. And unless there is political will to pave the way for cleaner sources of power over expensive, polluting fossil fuel options such as coal.  Renewable energy, such as power derived from the sun and the wind and the modern utilization of organic materials (bioenergy), is not just good for the environment; it is also good for the economy. Today, for instance, wind is considered the fastest growing energy resource, enjoying a phenomenal 30 percent annual growth rate!  Wind power can provide more than twice the expected world energy demand in 2020.

To protect the planet from climate change, we must phase out fossil fuels - the sooner, the better.  No less than an energy revolution is required.  Combined with energy efficiency, renewable energy is the positive, genuinely sustainable alternative.
