Actress Angel Aquino helps out at the Greenpeace Solar Café booth at the Philippine Senate in Manila 8 November 2006. The booth, which serves coffee and bread, runs on solar energy cells in the photo’s background. Greenpeace is holding a series of activities at the senate this week to call on lawmakers to fast-track the passage of a stronger renewable energy bill for the Philippines to make a significant contribution to stop climate change.
Manila, PHILIPPINES —
Famous actress, model, and mother Angel Aquino simply does not have time to rest. Amidst her busy work and family schedule, she has chosen to give back to Mother Earth by selflessly volunteering for Greenpeace. Here is a woman who truly believes that we cannot go on consuming more of the earth's precious resources without consequences. She also wants everyone to realize that we have the power to change this and that now is the time to act.
Angel was drawn into the Greenpeace family after she starred in the Cinemalaya film "Donsol". Her nuanced and convincing portrayal of a breast cancer survivor won her the best actress award. The movie vividly shows the beauty and struggles of the sea and whale sharks and Greenpeace was present at the Cinemalaya event. Angel immediately volunteered to be an Ocean Defender and proceeded to support Greenpeace initiatives to save the seas. At the screening of "Donsol" in CCP, she gave a talk about the plight of our abused oceans and sent the message out that we can do a lot to save them, even by simply signing up to be an Ocean Defender. Suffice to say that she gathered a lot of Ocean Defenders that day.
Since then, Angel has been hooked on Greenpeace. She, along with fellow model and Greenpeace supporter Amanda Griffin, welcomed the ship Esperanza when it docked here in Manila last August. The ship had traveled all over the world on an expedition to highlight the wonders and many environmental threats to our oceans and its inhabitants, and to campaign for the establishment of marine reserves.
Being a mother, Angel is concerned most about how this climate crisis we are in will affect future generations.
Recently, Ms. Aquino has been seen supporting the Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaign. Her efforts have included a trip to beautiful Apo Island where she, along with TV host Juddha Paolo, witnessed an installation of a solar photo-voltaic panel for the Apo Island Elementary School. After the installation, she had a storytelling session with the kids present at the event. Greenpeace is helping the local government of Negros in reaching their 100% Renewable Energy goal by harnessing power from the sun, wind, or modern biomass. Right now, Negros also uses wind turbines to help power their island through the help of Greenpeace and Solar Generation Pilipinas (international Greenpeace youth arm). Angel cannot stress enough the urgency of shifting from dirty fossil fuel to cleaner, renewable sources of energy. Hopefully, the whole country realizes that this is a viable option as proven by the efforts being done in Apo Island.
Being a mother, Angel is concerned most about how this climate crisis we are in will affect future generations. This is the reason why she has volunteered to go around to different schools in the metro teaching kids how to care for the environment through a school tour initiated by Solar Generation Pilipinas and Greenpeace. Her visit to the MI School along Katipunan has reaped great rewards as the children in the school carry on what they have learned from her to their owned homes.
To further stress the message of the Climate and Energy campaign, Angel and the Greenpeace team gathered at the Senate on November 7-9, 2006 to urge policymakers to hasten the approval of the new Renewable Energy Bill. Angel was there at the Greenpeace Solar Café, wearing her 'Clean Energy Now!' statement shirt. Braving the heat of the midday sun, she served up some mighty hot barako coffee and pandesal for the long stretch of people queuing just outside the Senate. The Solar Café was a hit, especially when Angel explained that all the energy they were using to brew the coffee came from the sun.
Angel Aquino continues to show her love and care for the environment through her involvement in the various campaigns that she has supported. She will remain an icon both in her chosen profession and in her advocacy for a greener earth.
