Anti-coal advocates and Greenpeace volunteers from Bacolod will probably tell you that veteran actor Joel Torre is up there in their list of favorite celebrities. And it’s not just because Joel is a native of Bacolod, or that he’s won more awards and made more movies than most other actors. And not even because of his down-to-earth, straightforward attitude and total lack of celebrity airs which makes him such a likeable next-door-neighbor sort of guy. It’s mostly because Joel Torre, the dedicated but unassuming veteran actor from Bacolod, is championing a cause close to their hearts: clean energy.

Joel Torre has been enthusiastically supporting the Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaign since last year. And it’s a cause that he approaches with the same commitment he does acting. The actor visited the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior during the Bacolod stop of the Philippine leg of the Asia Energy Revolution Ship Tour and was a special guest during the ship’s send off party at Bacolod’s Bredco port where he spoke in front of his fellow Bacolodians to continue rejecting coal and promoting the development of renewable energy in Negros Occidental. He filmed a 15-second TV spot in dialect on-board the Rainbow Warrior and gamely posed for photo-ops, and won over Bacolod Greenpeace volunteers and Greenpeace staff by just being himself and enjoying the send-off party like an old friend on a relaxing visit.

His next visit was a very pleasant surprise: he dropped in to say hello during the Greenpeace Christmas party in Manila. It’s not hard to imagine that, like the other stars who have shared a lot of their time supporting the clean energy campaign, Joel Torre must have been a Greenpeace volunteer in his previous life. We’re happy and grateful he’s sharing his star power with us to call for a massive switch to clean, renewable energy to stop climate change.
