Aksi ini bersamaan dengan perundingan di Barcelona, Spanyol untuk putaran akhir sebelum pertemuan iklim PBB yang sangat penting di bulan Desember.

Greenpeace tackles climate change at frontline of Indonesian rainforest destruction

This morning, fifty Greenpeace activists took action to prevent the destruction of Indonesia’s rainforests and called on world leaders to end global deforestation, which is responsible for about a fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions (1). The call came as negotiators meet in Barcelona, Spain for the final round of talks before December’s critical UN climate summit in Copenhagen.

Yesterday Greenpeace activists in two inflatable boats intercepted a ship in France, the Izmir Castle, carrying 15,000 tonnes of palm kernel from Indonesia in the port of Montoir-de-Bretagne. The Greenpeace activists painted "Climate Crime" on the hull of the cargo ship, while eleven other activists climbed on the top of three cranes unloading the cargo. They also unfurled banners reading "Funding for forest protection, not their destruction".

Kemarin aktivis Greenpeace menggunakan dua perahu karet menghalangi kapal Izmir Castle di Perancis yang mengangkut 15.000 ton biji kelapa sawit dari Indonesia di pelabuhan Montoir-de-Bretagne. Aktivis Greenpeace menuliskan “Climate Crime” (Kejahatan Iklim) di lambung kapal, sementara sebelas aktivis lainnya memanjat tiga tiang yang sedang membongkar kargo. Mereka membentangkan spanduk yang bertuliskan “Pendanaan untuk perlindungan hutan, bukan perusakannya.”

Greenpeace hari ini mengumumkan telah membangun pos di jantung hutan tropis Indonesia dan akan berada di sana hingga beberapa minggu ke depan untuk menarik perhatian dunia akan besarnya peranan perusakan hutan terhadap perubahan iklim yang berbahaya, satu isu kritis yang harus dibahas pada Pertemuan Iklim PBB di Kopenhagen Desember mendatang.

Greenpeace announced today that it has set up base in the heart of the Indonesian rainforest and will remain there for several weeks in order to bring urgent attention to the role that deforestation plays in driving dangerous climate change, a critical issue to be addressed at the UN Copenhagen Climate Summit in December.

Greenpeace today challenged ASEAN leaders to demonstrate collective leadership to protect Southeast Asia’s 850 million people from the debilitating impacts of climate change by committing to zero deforestation and low carbon development, and to force the leaders of the developed countries to agree to deep and binding cuts in global greenhouse gas emissions at the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen in December.

Greenpeace hari ini memberikan sebuah surat dan ucapan selamat berupa karangan bunga yang bertuliskan “Selamat Pak SBY Lanjutkan Tapi Stop Pembabatan Hutan” kepada Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono yang dilantik menjadi Presiden untuk periode kedua, dan menyerukan SBY tampil sebagai pemimpin dalam perang melawan perubahan iklim dengan mengurangi emisi gas rumah kaca Indonesia hingga 26 persen pada 2020.

Greenpeace today delivered a letter and a bouquet of flowers to congratulate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on his inauguration for his second presidential term, and for declaring his intention to take leadership in the battle against climate change by reducing Indonesia’s greenhouse emissions by 21 percent by 2020.
