Nuclear

Dear Activist/Supporters,

This week the Energy Ministers of ASEAN countries will meet in Bangkok to take important decisions regarding the future energy choices for the region. We have an opportunity to steer them away from their plans to invest in nuclear energy and instead invest in tapping the abundant sources of renewable energy such as solar, wind, biomass and geothermal to ensure energy security for all of us.

Join our "Don't Nuke ASEAN" march next Tuesday demanding that nuclear energy be taken off the table at the AMEM summit. Here are the details of the march: Date: Tuesday 5th Meeting point: Bangkok Art Gallery (opposite MBK Center) March starts at: 4:00pm Route of the March: From BKK Art Gallery to Intercontinental Hotel and marching on Skywalk back to Siam Square.

Nuclear power - a frightening risk to our safety and no answer to energy security:

All operating reactors in the world have inherent safety flaws. 1,500 quality and safety defects have already been found in the construction of the new reactor in Finland, described as state of the art.

Today, the precise death toll of the Chernobyl accident remains unknown but it is estimated to be more than one hundred thousand.

Radioactive pollution from nuclear power happens not only when there is an accident, but throughout the nuclear cycle, continuously harming our environment and health.

Furthermore, nuclear power puts us at risk of increased proliferation, terrorists getting nuclear materials or a nuclear reactor or nuclear transport being potential terrorist target.

Nuclear power produces nuclear waste, including the 200 000 tons of spent fuel amassed worldwide. This will remain deadly for hundreds of thousands of years. There is no safe solution to the long term management and disposal of hazardous radioactive waste despite billions of dollars in investment and decades of research.

The real solution for ensuring energy security is sustainable, cheap and safe decentralised renewable energy and energy efficiency.

I look forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday. Together, let's march towards a brighter, cleaner and safer future for Thailand. Thank you, Tara Buakamsri Campaign Manager Greenpeace Southeast Asia
