Bush’s Major Emitter Meeting at Toyako: A dead end for climate change

The Major Economies Meeting (originally the Major Emitters Meetings ) takes place in Toyako, Japan on 9 July on the sidelines of the G8 summit. It is an attempt by the Bush Administration to deflect international criticism from their ‘do nothing attitude’ on climate change. According to the US State Department, the process is “a new initiative to develop and contribute to a post-Kyoto framework on energy security and climate change by the end of 2008 ”.

Millions of people around the world are suffering food shortages, unaffordable food prices and hunger, primarily due to industrial farming, bad harvests related to climate change, unjust terms of trade and the rush for biofuels. There is no single solution to the crisis. The G8 leaders at the Toyako, Japan summit from 7-9 July, need to step up emergency assistance to the 850 million people who are suffering from hunger, and address the underlying causes of the current food crisis. G8 and Climate Change - Whats the Story?

Climate change is the greatest threat humanity faces, and has mainly been caused by G8 countries: Over 80 percent of the emissions in the atmosphere today have been produced by the G8. These countries still emit more than 40 percent of global CO2 emissions, despite being home to only 13 percent of the global population. It is the responsibility of G8 leaders to make clear binding commitments to fight climate change.

Vi släppte den första rankningen 'Guide to Greener Electronics' i augusti 2006. Guiden rankar de största dator- och mobiltelefonsproducenterna enligt deras policy gällande återvinning och miljögifter. Den här gången har vi även tagit med företagens energibesparande åtgärder i beräkningen.

Norrmyrberget ligger i Jokkmokks kommun. På det avverkade hygget fann Greenpeace att SCA brutit mot ett flertal av FSC:S miljöriktlinjer. Lågor hade körts över och naturvärdesträd avverkats. Rester av sju rödlistade arter hittades på hygget.

Kring Ratnivaara, cirka 3 mil söder om Gällivare, finns ett område med uppåt 200 hektar sammanhängande gammelskog. När Greenpeace undersökte den del av området som redan avverkats av SCA uppdagades att SCA brutit mot ett antal FSC-regler. De har tagit dålig hänsyn till rödlistade arter och avverkat naturvärdesträd. Greenpeace har nu tillsammans med Naturskyddsföreningen anmält SCA till FSC.
