Photo Internship (DC)

The Photo component of the Visual Communications Department creates, curates, and delivers the compelling, creative imagery that aims to support the goals, actions, and campaigns of Greenpeace.

The department endeavors to meet the needs of Greenpeace print and web imaging and to respond to requests from other Greenpeace and non-profit groups as well as media, magazine, and textbook publishers. The Photo team creates staff and team photos, documents actions and rallies in Washington, D.C. and other locations when appropriate, and commissions photo work around the United States. These and past photos need to be curated into the electronic archival systems, captioned, and referenced to facilitate long term storage, use, and value.

Responsibilities:

  • Covering events in Washington, D.C., including documenting activities in the Greenpeace facilities.
  • Creating staff portraits for new employees and team photos on request.
  • Editing, captioning and selecting images from photo shoots
  • Cataloguing shoots in local and international digital archives
  • Scanning in transparencies and negatives from the Greenpeace Archive
  • Creating galleries and slideshows of images on the Greenpeace and flickr website from events and actions
  • Assisting with research and delivery on internal and external image requests
  • Organizing electronic files

Skills You May Learn or Practice:

  • Setting up studio lights for individual and group portraits
  • Digital Photography in a variety of conditions and situations
  • Using Photomechanic, Photoshop, and other software effectively
  • Improving communication skills
  • Collaborating with others to conceive and create projects

Requirements:

  • Photojournalism or documentation background
  • Photography/camera experience preferred
  • Photoshop, Photomechanic, Lightroom and Bridge photo editing skills
  • Creative imagination, ability to engage with groups and create visually compelling images
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Critical thinking skills
  • The ability to complete work and reach goals independently as well as contribute in a collaborative environment
  • Detail-oriented
  • Enthusiasm for protecting the environment and commitment to non-violence as a means of affecting change
