In the United States, we are working to permanently protect and restore ancient forests on public lands. A first step is for our government to end commercial logging that is destroying our heritage forests. We recommend an immediate moratorium on all commercial logging and road building in federal forests. Over the long term, our government must adopt policies that protect and restore our forests.

The National Forest Protection and Restoration Act

We support the passage of H. R. 2169, the National Forest Protection and Restoration Act (NFPRA), also known as the Leach Bill. This bi-partisan bill would:
  • End the federal timber sale program in national forests, national wildlife refuges, Bureau of Land Management lands, and national parks.
  • Redirect logging subsidies towards scientifically based ecological restoration of native biological diversity.
  • Protect communities by reducing the incidence of severe fire using prescribed burning and manual hazardous fuels treatments.
  • Save taxpayers over $300 million annually.
  • Provide funding for worker retraining, and give preference to displaced timber workers for jobs in the woods doing ecological restoration.
  • Provide permanent funding to counties for schools and roads.
  • Provide funding for environmentally sensitive non-wood alternative paper and construction materials.
  • Allow the use of forest materials from restoration projects for non-commercial public purposes, such as fuel to heat low-income homes or timber for low-income housing.
