• SolarChill is a breakthrough solar powered cooling technology. It will revolutionize the way vaccines and refrigeration are delivered to regions of the world that have no electricity or an unstable grid.

• SolarChill is environmentally sound, battery-free, reliable and affordable. It does not use HFC’s (potent greenhouse gases) in the refrigeration cycle or in the insulation foam, and it provides a radical improvement in the the cold chain (the cooling network required to protect medicine from manufacturer to recipient).

• SolarChill maintains the required temperature range for vaccines for 5 – 6 days (even with no electrical source of exposure to sunlight) compared to 3 - 4 hours in the most common coolers. This effective cooling protection at the point of delivery means that millions of doses of medicine will be protected from spoilage.

• SolarChill is the first affordable battery-free solar cooler. SolarChill stores its power in ice instead of in batteries. Batteries break down often and pose serious environmental and health problems upon disposal.

• SolarChill is usable virtually anywhere in the developing world. It is more reliable, cleaner and cheaper than the kerosene refrigerators currently in usage. Also, SolarChill can be powered both by solar power and an electrical source.

THE SOLARCHILL CONSORTIUM

SolarChill technology was developed over a six year period through a partnership comprised of the Danish Technological Institute, GTZ Proklima (German Government Development Agency), Greenpeace, Programs for Appropriate Technologies in Health (PATH), United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

SolarChill prototypes have been successfully field tested over an 18 month period in Senegal, Indonesia and Cuba. Equipment used in vaccine and medicine storage has to comply with a set of performance standards defined by WHO and UNICEF. SolarChill was submitted for technical certification to the WHO and received acceptance in November 2006 at an official event located in India.
