Feature story - October 19, 2006
The Esperanza is currently sitting just outside the world's biggest marine reserve and although it covers 137,792 sq. miles it is just a small spot in the expanse of the world's oceans. The reserve is a great first step for the US but in order to protect the full range of marine life a network of such reserves is needed throughout US waters and this US network should be part of a global network.
If you're still in any doubt as to why we need marine reserves,
just ask these fish...
Right now there are opportunities in both America and Europe to
make significant steps towards creating networks of marine reserves
in their waters: the US government has initiated a consultation
process asking the American people about how it should go about
creating a national network of protected areas in US waters and in
Europe a new marine law is being developed which has the potential
to set in place the foundation for a European network. You can help
to make a global network of marine reserves a reality. Take action!
