Taking Action at the WTO to Stop Forced Trade

Feature story - September 15, 2003
Get an inside perspective from our team in Cancun, Mexico, including our action against an illegal shipment of genetically contaminated corn and the failure of the meetings to reach an agreement.

Early Friday morning we took action against a ship delivering an illegal shipment of U.S. genetically engineered corn to the Mexican port of Veracruz. Activists occupied the anchor chain of a ship carrying a 40,000 ton cargo for 13 hours. Although the Captain announced that the ship had been called back to the U.S., military escorts brought it into dock where its contaminated cargo was unloaded.

In response, Greenpeace Mexico is filing a legal case against six high-ranking government officials.

The following day, the entire Meeting officially collapsed without agreements being reached by the delegates.
