A charitable gift annuity has many important advantages. It is, in effect, a contract between Greenpeace and the donor that in exchange for a gift of at least $10,000 the donor will receive an annual payment for life. A charitable gift annuity can be funded with cash, appreciated stock, or other property. The payment is established at the time of the gift (and never changes) and is based on the donor's age. Gift annuities are easy to set up. Donors who make gift annuity contributions are also eligible for an income tax deduction, and a portion of the annuity payments are received free of income tax. There are additional capital gains tax savings when funding a gift annuity with appreciated securities.
Deferred gift annuities are also available at Greenpeace by making the gift now and deferring payments until at least age 65. Deferred gift annuities provide an excellent way for people earning wages now to augment retirement income.
