Washington, DC- In response to the Senate confirmation of Rick Perry as Energy Secretary, Greenpeace USA Spokesperson Cassady Craighill said:

“Rick Perry’s standing as one of the more acceptable of Trump’s cabinet picks indicates just how far off-course Trump has thrown the United States.  As governor of Texas, Perry allowed oil, gas and chemical companies on ‘Refinery Row’ to emit cancer-causing pollutants, which nearby residents and communities would breathe every day. The US Senate must not play along with this normalization of industry stooges in charge of this country. The fact remains that the majority of  people in this country want action on climate change and more than half of Trump voters said they support clean energy initiatives and eliminating federal subsidies to fossil fuel companies. We have to ensure that Rick Perry receives that message loud and clear with help from state leaders and congressional allies.”
