Greenpeace response to President Obama’s renewable energy announcements

May 9, 2014

Washington DC – In response to President Obama’s announcement and executive actions today to encourage solar energy and energy efficiency, Greenpeace USA climate and energy campaign director Gabe Wisniewski said:

“The fact that some of the most successful and innovative companies in the economy like Google, Apple and Yahoo are embracing solar power shows that it’s ready for primetime. The only thing stopping millions of Americans from following them is regressive utilities like Duke Energy, which are clinging to their century-old monopoly business models and blocking their customers from harnessing the sun.

“The president, the American people and leading American businesses all want in on the solar revolution – utilities need to join them or get out of the way.”

Greenpeace’s Green Internet campaign has helped push major IT companies like Facebook and Apple to commit to powering their data centers with 100% renewable energy, and is now urging Amazon and others to join them.

On Monday, May 12, Greenpeace will release a major new report, “Energy [R]evolution – A Sustainable USA Energy Outlook,” which details how we can quickly transition the US economy to nearly 100% renewable energy.
