As a building material wood has inherent environmental advantages. It is a renewable resource, energy efficient, and biodegradable. Windows and siding made with wood are easy to handle, absorb sound well and tend to be easy to repair (though they require periodic painting). Timber windows are the most ecologically appropriate choice, but concerns regarding timber harvesting remain. Major advances have been made in timber window technology, which brings their energy efficiency and ease of installation well in line with the best performing PVC windows.

When purchasing wood windows and siding, the buyer should do whatever they can to insure the products are produced using sustainable forestry/environmental methods. It is important to choose wood from certified forests, where clear-cutting and other environmentally damaging techniques are not practiced. Sustainable woods usually include; Pine, Larch, Spruce and Beech or reclaimed wood. Products made of Western Red Cedar, Western Hemlock, Pacific Silver Fir, Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir and Redwoods are suspect for non-sustainable forest products.
