In response to the decision by the US District Court’s decision that the Trump Administration shortcut environmental review in approving the Dakota Access Pipeline, and that it awaits additional briefing before deciding whether to shut the pipeline down, Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said:

“This is a tremendous development for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and for all people downriver from the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Water Protectors inspired the world with their courage and their persistent, peaceful stand against a disastrous piece of infrastructure. The victory they won last year, which was based on sound legal and environmental reasoning, should have stood. Instead, Donald Trump disregarded the law and imposed the will of the oil and gas industry over the rights of a sovereign nation and the water and health of millions. The courts have yet again rejected his Administration’s overreach.

“The Water Protectors reminded us all of the power that lies with people willing to resist in uncompromised nonviolence. However oil is still flowing through the pipeline. The resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline, Energy Transfer Partners, and industry’s stranglehold over this democracy goes on. The world awaits the court’s next move.”
