I started my first enviromental activism as a junior in high school in 1970 circulating petitions over plastic bottles and landfill issues.
About that same time I planted my first organic garden of many to
follow. Later I spent three years in South America, including a year in
the rainforest, during which time my use of, and very access to, high
energy consumption, was severely curtailed.
For the last 12 years I have been driving a truck across country for a
living. I have seen more severe weather than I care to remember. And I
have seen notable changes in the length of seasons, shifting weather
patterns across regions and an enormous apathy from the citizenry in
general. You ask about hybrids but what about the sheer number of SUVs,
pickup trucks for people who never pick anything up, Hummers for
heaven's sake, wave runners and dune buggies to mention but a few. Just
starting there would be a great help.
