The Greenpeace Forests for Climate proposal for a hybrid market-linked fund would provide the financing needed to help protect the world's remaining tropical forests. The proposal aims to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (known as REDD) in developing countries.

This new mechanism would become part of the next (post-2012) phase of the Kyoto Protocol, although financing could be made available as early as 2009. A critical element of this proposal, or any REDD mechanism, would be to attain both climate and biodiversity objectives in a manner that fully respects the rights of the local and indigenous peoples.
