Title: Accountant Central Africa

Contract type: 12 months FTC (Renewable based on performance)

Reporting to: Head of Finance

Location:  Cameroon is the preferred location, but the role will also support the Cameroon and DRC offices, as well as other locations across Africa. GPAF operates under a hybrid work model, with work-from-home serving as the primary work arrangement.


Purpose of the Role 

The Accountant is tasked with gathering, maintaining, monitoring, and reporting all financial data for the regional office. This role ensures that financial systems operate efficiently and align with Greenpeace Africa’s policies, procedures, and guidelines. Additionally, the Accountant provides ongoing communication about the regional office’s financial status to inform and support decision-making by management and stakeholders.

Main duties 

Finance Operations

Purchase Ledger Administration

  • Ensure timely sending, recording and payment of invoices, 
  • Reconciliation of Greenpeace Africa bank accounts and credit/debit card accounts, 
  • payments to consultants, including efficient handling of internal & external queries, in order to maintain cost control within Greenpeace Africa. 
  • Maintaining supplier accounts.

Petty Cash/Accounts

  • Ensure proper control and administration of the cash-book, accurately recording expenditure and reconciling them with the internal accounting system; Reconciliation of petty cash on a daily/weekly basis
  • Administer  bank accounts within the region, ensuring efficient and effective cash flow within Greenpeace Africa 

Record Management 

  • Ensure all records of GPA expenses, payments, bank statements, budgets and accounts are fully and neatly maintained and accessible.
  • Ensuring documents are stored appropriately and retained in line with local regulatory requirements and GP internal requirements.
  • Ensure all balance sheet reconciliations are submitted for review timeously this includes; Fixed Assets, bank account, advance accounts and all control accounts.

Internal Control

Internal Control Environment

  • Minimise the possibility of fraud by means of internal checks, in compliance with law and regulations, in order to ensure the security of Greenpeace Africa’s assets.
  • Ensure all transactions and requests are adequately scrutinized to ensure they are properly authorized and budgeted and comply with organizational policies prior to final processing.
  • Ensure that the Procurement policy is adhered to at all times.

Qualifications and Experience 

  • University degree in Accounting and/or Finance, or an equivalent.
  • Completed Articles advantageous
  • 3 years of experience in a similar role, Preferably in an INGO
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Experience of an accounting software program, SUN advantageous
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English and French is essential.
  • Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for SMEs
  • Excellent reconciliation skills
  • Experience working with multi-currencies
