{"id":11476,"date":"2020-06-03T18:21:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=11476"},"modified":"2021-12-01T12:43:24","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:43:24","slug":"greenpeace-africa-concerned-over-ppe-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/11476\/greenpeace-africa-concerned-over-ppe-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Africa concerned over PPE pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Durban, 03 June 2020 \u2013\u00a0The need for masks, latex gloves, and other single-use PPEs to reduce the spread of COVID-19 has increased but they are not being properly disposed of.\u00a0In response to the growing problem, Greenpeace Africa&#8217;s Climate and Energy Campaigner, Nhlanhla Sibisi says PPEs are vital in the fight against the coronavirus, especially for those on the frontlines. <\/p>\n\n<p>But he says we need a proper disposal system to deal with these, the wet wipes and hand sanitiser bottles after their use. He says in most cases, and recently we have seen through beach cleanups, gloves are ending up on the beaches.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;This means that without having a proper system in place to dispose and recycle just like we see with plastics, the items are ending up in the environment and in our waterways whether it is on land, sea, or rivers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Sibisi believes it\u2019s not only consumers who must take responsibility for lessening the impact of these items on the environment.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>Originally published by East Coast Radio
