{"id":11569,"date":"2020-07-03T07:17:04","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T07:17:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/?p=11569"},"modified":"2021-12-01T12:43:01","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:43:01","slug":"deutsche-banks-loan-to-halcyon-agri-a-new-low-in-due-diligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/11569\/deutsche-banks-loan-to-halcyon-agri-a-new-low-in-due-diligence\/","title":{"rendered":"DEUTSCHE BANK\u2019S LOAN TO HALCYON AGRI: A NEW LOW IN DUE DILIGENCE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reactive for immediate release&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Yaound\u00e9, 03 July 2020 &#8211; <\/strong><strong>Greenpeace Africa calls for the immediate cancellation of Deutsche Bank&#8217;s <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.db.com\/newsroom_news\/2020\/deutsche-bank-and-halcyon-agri-corporation-partner-on-sustainability-through-innovative-new-loan-en-11623.htm\"><strong>$25 million loan<\/strong><\/a><strong> to Singapore-based rubber producer Halcyon Agri to support investments in its Cameroon and Malaysia plantations. One of Halcyon&#8217;s Cameroon units, Sud Cameroun H\u00e9v\u00e9a (Sudcam), has <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/africa\/en\/press\/8593\/we-were-told-not-to-go-into-the-forest-anymore-greenpeace-investigation-exposes-human-rights-violations-by-halcyon-agri\/\"><strong>displaced<\/strong><\/a><strong> I<\/strong><strong>ndigenous People and destroyed 10,000 ha of pristine rainforest on the border of the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The company violates basic transparency standards and refuses to disclose the identity of Sudcam&#8217;s minority shareholder, widely <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-africa-stateless\/2018\/10\/8f21a9bc-8f21a9bc-greenpeace-africa-sudcam-report-2018-1.pdf\"><strong>believed<\/strong><\/a><strong> to be the son of President Paul Biya, in power for 37 years.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe heinous record of Halcyon Agri on human rights and environment, in violation of its own sustainability policy, puts it well below any standard to qualify for financing. Deutsche Bank must cancel its loan to Halcyon Agri. The bank would do better to invest its millions directly in the communities whose livelihood the firm destroyed and the rainforest it trashed,\u201d said Ir\u00e8ne Wabiwa Betoko, Greenpeace\u2019s Congo Basin Forest campaign manager.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2018, Norway\u2019s national pension fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ai-cio.com\/news\/norway-pension-fund-excludes-halcyon-agri-environmental-damage\/\">divested<\/a> from Halcyon Agri due to &#8220;an unacceptable risk that the company is responsible for severe environmental damage as a result of its conversion of tropical forest into rubber plantations in Cameroon.&#8221; The fund&#8217;s Council on Ethics found it &#8220;astonishing&#8221; that Sudcam&#8217;s environmental impact assessment failed to mention that two species in the area to be deforested are critically endangered and &#8220;at very high risk of [&#8230;] becoming extinct.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Last year, after its Hevecam rubber mill spewed effluent with Total Suspended Solids levels 250% over the legal limit, Halcyon Agri explained<a href=\"https:\/\/clicktime.symantec.com\/3NbAL3nvgLeSYyENtuN62Sz7Vc?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.halcyonagri.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F04%2FHalcyon-Corporate-Report-2019.pdf\"> to shareholders<\/a> repairs were put off \u201cin response to the challenging market conditions.\u201d&nbsp; A June 2019 UNESCO mission <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/document\/174684\">report<\/a> listed three of the four herbicides and fungicides used by Sudcam as known or probable carcinogens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The Deutsche Bank loan, part of which will be used \u201cto provide additional food security and boost the income of 13,000 local smallholder farmers,\u201d comes only a week after Halcyon Agri prepared workers at the Hevecam plantation for massive lay-offs of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cameroon-info.net\/article\/cameroun-crise-hevecam-va-licencier-des-employes-pour-motif-economique-376071.html\">reportedly<\/a> 1,500 employees, out of a total 6,000.
